The Holy Trinity Square

As early as in the 19. century was Požega called „the Athens in Slavonia“ because of its culture, and the Holy Trinity Square in a baroque style is the town centre and an important cultural monument. Požega is the so-called town-monument because of its heritage and a rich „Golden Valley“ history.
The Holy Trinity Square with its irregular triangle shape, bolts and a baroque column takes a special place. On the Square there is also a Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Holy Spirit from the 13. century, St. Lawrence Church with murals from the 14. century, a building of the Jesuits' collegiat body built in 1711., the first Grammar School from 1726., the Old Town Hall and the museum.

Wine Cellar in Kutjevo

From the former Jesuitical residence which included the church, out-houses and gardens, the famous wine cellar only remained. The wine cellar is the oldest in Croatia and has the tradition of almost 800 years. It came into existence by construction of the cistercian cellar in 1232. which is even today one of the symbols of Croatian continenetal wine culture. There is a legend connected to it, about a secret love affair between the empress Maria Theresia and baron Trenk. They had allegedly met at night and would spend up to seven days together in the cellar without coming out. Throughout history the conquerors and owners have changed but the wine tradition has been kept till now, which is confirmed in numerous medals and certificates.

The Church of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Kutjevo

In 1232. in Kutjevo the Croatian-hungarian king Andrew II had sent cistercians to found a monastery-abbey. After their arrival they built a monastery and a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in gothic style. During the Ottoman rule the church was destroyed and not renovated until the 18. century by Jesuits in a baroque style. The new church came into existence as a baroque interpretation of the medieval cistercian church. Therefore, the church in Kutjevo shows the full meaning and value of this cistercian architecture, withour the original one being preserved. Today's church with its park, gardens and the castle makes a unique monumental heritage. There are as many as 12 objects protected as valuable examples of art. The picture of the Miraculous Lady of Kutjevo or Mary with a Child from the 16. century is worth mentioning as a very rare late rennessaince monument. The medieval church in Kutjevo represents a special place in the Croatian heritage and is the key of the gothic architecture in Slavonia. .

Medieval Town Kaptol

Right in the centre of Kaptol, founded by Pečuj diocese there is a medieval fortress. It is the landmark of Kaptol and one of the biggest and best preserved monuments left. The fortress was devastated, rebuilt and changed its aim in the past. The hexagonal fortress with round half-towers and a square entrance was built in a renaissance way and was surrounded by a ditch filled with water. The remains today are a part of the church property of St. Peter's Zborni Kaptol, and inside the fortress there was evidence of the former gothic church. Inside the northern wall, in the 18.century, a partly preserved baroque church of St. George with a bell-tower was built. In the 19. century after its owner had changed, the church was converted into granary. The fortress was conquered by the Ottomans, and was even the residence of the conqueror Dizdar-aga.
Today this fortress represents one of the best preserved fortresses from the pre-Ottoman time, it has been renovated and is on its way to be brought back to life by the diocese of Požega.

St Theresia's Cathedral

Nobody has ever found out who was the constructor of this extraordinary late baroque cathedral, but it is known that the ground-plan was sent by the empress Maria Theresia herself. The foundation stone was put in June 1756., and the conctruction lasted seven years. There is a stone board on which are Maria Theresia and bishop Thauzy engraved and mentioned as beneficiaries for the construction of the church. The board from 1763. is situated above the portal. The interior is in the late baroque and rococo style. The main altar with its monumentality dominates and represents a rare example of the baroque and rococo unity. It was given by the bishop Franjo Thauzy at the consecration of the church. The beauty of the church is enhanced by paintings from 1898.and 1899. made by famous Croatian painters Celestin Medović and Oton Iveković.
